The most recent example was an email I received from Wanda, a recurrent vaginal cancer survivor. Long story short, she has an incredibly rare form of cancer which required an even rarer form of treatment. After going to what many consider one of the best cancer centers in the country (MD Anderson), she returned to Savannah, GA realizing she could get cutting edge treatment much closer to home. That's if you could call a 4 1/2 hour commute to Savannah "closer". However, after her very risky surgery, her treatment was not over. Because of the high risk for complications, she needed daily monitoring but on an outpatient basis. Wanda's husband had just lost his job and they were living off of cashed in retirement funds. Faced with a month-long hotel bill, Wanda shared with me,
When Dr. Burke told me I needed to stay in Savannah for a month after my release from the hospital, I didn’t know how we could financially afford to do that. When the nurse navigator told me about your Foundation I cried because I couldn’t believe this was available. The simple words, “Thank You,” hardly seem appropriate enough to properly express the deep gratitude I feel in my heart. .. It would have been impossible for me to even try to commute. I am so thankful for your organization covering my accommodations. It was such a huge relief.
I'm happy to say that Wanda is cancer free. If you've known someone with cancer, you know that the expenses emotionally and financially are overwhelming. I'm so incredibly proud that we have an organization that is 100% volunteer and that all of the proceeds from our events go directly to help women in need and to provide education. This is just one story of how we've helped and there are many others. We may be small but we're making a big difference in the lives of those in need. We've raised over $60,000 for local women and our goal from this year's 5K is $25,000. All donations are tax-deductible and there is no amount too small. Thank you for your support and we hope to see you at the 5K! BTW- We're having a special recognition of survivors this year- details to follow. You can also register as teams and fundraise to honor someone you know with GYN cancer. Which team will raise the most money this year??
