The details and registration are finally complete for our first big fundraiser! Please see the "coming events" page and register for our 5K Walk/Run on September 24, 2011. I have two major goals for this event. First, I really want to spread the word about our new organization and get people talking about saving "Hoo-Hahs"! I know for many women with a gynecological cancer, they feel so alone during the diagnosis and the many months that follow. We need to have many more frank discussions about the risk for gyn cancers and what can be done about prevention and early detection. I know so many women affected by just ovarian and cervical cancer alone, yet there is so little that is discussed on a regional or national level. Secondly, I want the proceeds from this first race to immediately help women in our area battling cancer. My Mom (ovarian cancer survivor) just returned from a 16 day trip out West that she called her "bucket list trip". I'll post details and pictures later but most importantly, she and my Dad had an amazing trip that was inspirational and therapeutic for them both. She is feeling good now but knows her cancer will return at some point. I know many cancer survivors are struggling just to pay the bills, with the astronomical costs of cancer treatments. I thought that in honor of my Mom, part of the proceeds from my first race would go to help other women with ovarian cancer take a trip. Sometimes just getting away for even a few days from the medical bills, stress and anxiety of the cancer battle can help tremendously.
I also want to work on educating teens and young adults about the importance of HPV prevention and vaccination. I've had a few friends approach me about speaking to different groups of young adults and hope the proceeds from this race can help in this area as well. So many cervical cancer cases can be prevented if we just get the word out! Please help me spread the word about our race and if you're not able to partipate but still want to make a donation, you can do this via the active.com website. Thanks for your help!
